How Google’s Three Strike System for Violating Their Advertising Policies Works

Attentive business owners and marketers may have already seen the news: starting in September 2021, Google will introduce a pilot program for a system based on 3 warnings for repeated violations of their advertising policies.

With this new system, the American advertising giant wants to prevent harmful or unsafe advertisements from being shown via Google Ads .

The purpose of Google’s three strike system

These types of ads have been banned for a long time, but Google is now introducing penalties that become more severe with each additional warning.

As an advertiser, you will be notified by email if you have committed a violation according to Google. For the first two violations (notification and first warning) you will be given the opportunity to correct the violations. Before the Google ads can be resumed, you will have to fill out a form.

After 90 days, the warnings expire. There are possible scenarios within that period:

If Google has not found any new violations in those 90 days, your Google Ads account will remain in good standing.
Are you naughty again according to Google and do you get another warning? Then the process starts again from the notification. One bright spot: as an advertiser you can still appeal enforcement decisions after the introduction of this pilot.
The feedback from this pilot of Google’s three-strike system will be used by the search engine giant as a basis to further expand the warning system with additional policies in the future.

How can you prepare your Google ads?

Because Google’s three strike system is an algorithm (there is no human review of ads), it is important that ads trigger the algorithm as little as possible. It is crucial for advertisers to thoroughly check their ads on several aspects:

The heads;
The descriptions;
The extensions;
The URLs.
Don’t use wording that could be misinterpreted by the algorithm. I know, this is going to be a challenge, but it’s the only option to successfully advertise in Google Ads from now on .

Marketers, communicate the system to your customers!

Are you an online marketer who manages Google Ads accounts for external clients? Then my advice is to communicate the pilot of Google’s three strike system to your clients as soon as possible. This way they can take into account the consequences of this new system, such as the possible extra hours you have to spend monitoring the advertising campaigns.

My opinion as an online marketer about Google’s three strike system

I understand Google. Of course they don’t want someone selling a shipment of Kalashnikovs or a shipping container of heroin through Google Ads. It’s good that Google is buy bank database taking responsibility to protect internet users from this kind of bad stuff.

On the other hand, I also foresee problems for honest, well-meaning advertisers. Google’s three-strike system pilot could have negative consequences for them. For example, ads could be wrongly flagged for violations more often. Even before the introduction of this new system, Google was b2c lead sometimes a bit too zealous in unjustly punishing advertisers. With this strict system, this may only happen more often.

Or not. Time will tell.

I’ll keep you posted.
